Check out our #EarthMonth recap + tips to make a difference! 🌍💚

.

Reflecting on April: #EarthMonth and #PlasticWaste 💚🌍

April is coming to an end. Throughout the month, you probably came across lots of information surrounding the topic of #EarthMonth and #EarthDay. We also just had Fashion Revolution Week, which happens every in April during the anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, a disaster which killed 1138 people and injured many more on April 24, 2013. During Fashion Revolution Week, brands, and producers are encouraged to respond with the hashtag #IMADEYOURCLOTHES and to demonstrate transparency in their supply chain.

If you haven’t been too distracted with Game of Thrones return, the latest Avengers Movie, or that messy Mueller report, I’m sure over the past month you might’ve seen related articles from news outlets around the world, organizations and activists, and even items and promotions from brands that claim to make a difference and urging you to be a more conscious, responsible consumer, including us!

“Every Day is Earth Day,” everyone says. Sometimes, it does take an unofficial holiday to really celebrate and drive the key points home. What are those, you might ask?

Number 1: protect our planet. 🌍

Number 2: because it’s dying, and we’re the ones killing it. We're also the only ones who can save it. 💚

“There’s no planet B."

We can go on and on about all the bad things that are killing the world. Plastic, in particular, is one of the most talked about villains in the pollution destruction. Microplastics flowing into the ocean (they are even falling from the skies now!) and eventually finding a way into our bodies.

I guess it’s true what they say: what goes around, really does come around.

But enough about us: there are massive amounts of plastic materials filling up the sea and creatures’ bellies, killing not only thousands of marine lives but also animals who depend on those for survival. May I remind you: we are also animals on this planet.

Fortunately, many across the world are trying to make a difference and help save our planet and our oceans. We have researchers tirelessly looking for solutions, organizations donating to the cause, governments banning straws and single-use plastic, and even individuals who ~actually~ do their best to be conscious consumers. Proper recycling goes a long way, and if you do that, cheers to you!

It’s important to remember that we can make a difference in the small things and use our resources as best as we can. Everything counts, and informing ourselves is a great starting point.

TAKE NOTES: Here are two important tips (and sub-tips) we have for you to help reduce #PlasticWaste:

GO PLASTIC FREE. ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. 🙅🙅‍♂️

  • Choose brands that offer plastic-free packaging. (Hint: we offer plastic-free packaging).
  • Take your own tote bag to the supermarket (if you can avoid taking paper bags, even better!)
  • Bring your own metal/reusable straw with you. Seriously, the last thing we need is another straw floating on your oceans and hurting marine life.

RESEARCH. EDUCATE YOURSELVES. INFORMATION IS KEY! 🔑 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫

  • Educating ourselves might be the most important thing here. Research brands that are making a difference, avoid the ones that don’t care about our planet or the environment. Ask questions. Reach out to companies and the government, and hold them accountable!
